Librarian wears 2 hats

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Meza said she will also be examining ways to streamline and standardize policies between both libraries, cheap Famous hatsbut otherwise she has no intention of reinventing the wheel.

"I think it's important for kids to have access and programs at the library," Meza commented. "I don't think we want a generation of kids that are not familiar with library services."

In addition to Meza's contract, the council approved the hiring of a part-time children's librarian, wholesale Famous hatsand Meza said she hopes to fill the position quickly.

Meza said that while she does not plan any dramatic changes, she is already working to restore the children's program in Willows.

Meza said she anticipates a smooth transition. She spent her first day in the Willows office on Thursday.

"I see a lot of potential and many, many positive aspects for (combining the libraries)," Meza said. "It is somewhat experimental, but most library systems in the state are county run, so we're actually just getting more in line with (the industry standard)."

Meza, however, said she was eager for the opportunity.

Meza took over Orland's library in May 2009 following the retirement of longtime Director Marilyn Cochran. It was Cochran's reluctance to take on the additional responsibilities of the Willows job that prevented the cities from combining in the past.

While the move could signal the beginning of big changes in local government, specific changes for joint library programming are relatively minor, but, at least in Willows, fairly significant.

The new contract expires June 30 each year and is automatically renewable. However, either city can back out of the deal with written 30-day notice, authorities said.

Meza said she plans to split her time between Willows and Orland as much as possible.

The cities agreed to split the cost of Meza's contract in half after agreeing to give her a $10,000 raise for the increased responsibilities. Meza's base salary is now about $66,000, plus benefits. Willows also agreed to give her a monthly gas stipend of $200, as the job also involves responsibilities in Bayliss and Elk Creek.

Meza is still considered an Orland employee. She has been contracted to run the Willows site, but is not a city staff member, Holsinger explained.

Holsinger added that the cities could consider a similar arrangement with Hamilton City if the situation ever becomes right.

"The money is actually not a big factor," Holsinger said. "Glenn County is not really big enough to support full libraries in both cities. It's more efficient to have one director for the county, the way Butte County does."

Holsinger said, potential financial gains aside, the move is an example of "good government."

"I think it's win-win for both cities," cheap New era jordan hatsHansen said.

The move is expected to save about $19,000 in Willows and $36,000 in Orland for the current fiscal year, a highly motivating factor as both cities continue to struggle with deficit spending.

"But we're still open to look at any proposals," he added.

However, the prospect of combining library directors is the only proposal to ever gain any traction, Willows City Manager Steve Holsinger said.

Officials from Willows and Orland have frequently discussed the possibility of combining programs and services, everything from widely supported ideas such as the sharing emergency dispatchers, to less popular proposals such combining the services of the public works and police departments.

The move comes during an ever deepening financial crunch, and after years of unsuccessful attempts to hire one director to run both sites.

"It just makes good business sense," Willows Councilman Gary Hansen said.

The Willows City Council approved Tuesday a joint services agreement with Orland to have Glenn County native Jody Meza run the libraries for both cities. Orland's council adopted its half of the agreement last month.

"We've been looking for ways to combine services for a very long time,"wholesale New era jordan hatsWillows Councilman Vince Holvik said.

After years of false starts and near misses, Glenn County's two largest cities have started experimenting with combining government services in an effort to reduce expenses and improve efficiency.

Percy Harvin’s migraine headaches

The Minnesota Vikings jersey receiver had two catches for 30 yards and took two big shots to the head Saturday night in a preseason victory over Seattle, the first time he's played this year after being stricken by migraines for most of training camp

49ERS — San Francisco waived wide receiver Bakari Grant, cornerback Patrick Stoudamire and waived/injured linebacker Brandon Long.

PACKERS — Daryn Colledge will start at left guard for Green Bay, the same spot where he finished last season.

TEXANS — Houston released cornerback Fred Bennett, receiver London Crawford and defensive end Pannel Egboh.

EAGLES — Wide receiver DeSean Jackson, who sat out with an upper back strain, will be Philadelphia's punt returner this season and starting cornerback Ellis Hobbs will be the kickoff return man.

n Jets outside linebacker Calvin Pace will miss a few weeks with a broken right foot, meaning New York's top pass rusher could be sidelined for at least the first game of the regular season.

The 32-year-old Coles, signed to his third tour with the Jets last month, had four catches for 19 yards in three preseason games.

JETS — New York released Laveranues Coles, a move that likely signals the end of the popular wide receiver's career.

Also on Sunday, the Bengals put safety Gibril Wilson on injured reserve with damaged ligaments in his left knee and they waived rookie long snapper Mike Windt.

BENGALS — Cincinnati released wide receiver Antonio Bryant, who got a four-year, $28 million deal in March but has been sidelined by a bad knee during training camp.

Kelly pulled his left hamstring working out with Donovan McNabb in Arizona the week before training camp opened. Kelly missed the first three preseason games and has fallen behind other receivers as the cheap Redskins jersey look ahead to the final roster cuts on Saturday.

n Malcolm Kelly has one week to show he belongs on Washington's roster.

McNabb hasn't practiced since spraining his left ankle in the second preseason game against Baltimore.

"I really don't know for sure," Shanahan said. "That's why it's day by day. We'll see how it goes."

REDSKINS — It could be a smoke screen or just a cautious assessment of his quarterback's health, but Mike Shanahan says he's not certain Donovan McNabb will be available for Washington's season opener against the Dallas Cowboys jersey .

Harvin has barely practiced this month while dealing with the death of his grandmother and a string of headaches that have been maddeningly random and devastatingly severe. No one knows exactly when they're going to occur or what triggers them. Even more frustrating, doctors and trainers have been unable to come up with a treatment to neutralize them.

"I felt great," Harvin said after the game. "Just glad to get back out there with my teammates and work some of the rust off. I've got a lot of work to do, conditioning-wise, but it felt good to get out there."

After another battery of tests last week, and a promising 2010 preseason debut, Harvin hopes he is getting closer to figuring out a debilitating medical condition that has plagued him for most of his life.

Percy Harvin jersey 's migraine headaches have been a riddle that no one has been able to solve.

The rookie running back capped off a feisty night practice for the Tennessee Titans

The rookie running back capped off a feisty night practice for the Tennessee Titans with a short punch to the helmet of defensive end Eric Bakhtiari a few moments after having his helmet ripped off.

Blount had just returned to the Titans on Wednesday night after being excused since Sunday for personal reasons. He was carrying the ball in a drill near the goal line when his helmet came off, and he kept his feet moving toward the end zone.

The play ended with some pushing and shoving, then Blount threw a right into Bakhtiari's facemask.

Blount was suspended for most of last season with Oregon after he decked a Boise State player after a game.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — This punch won't be so costly for LeGarrette Blount.

The rookie running back capped off a feisty night practice for the Tennessee Titans with a short punch to the helmet of defensive end Erik Bakhtiari a few moments after having his helmet ripped off.

After being placed on the PUP or "Physically Unable to Perform" list to start the Tennessee Titans training camp last month, the second-year NFL pro was cleared to practice with the team last week, although he did not get a chance to play in the Titans preseason opener against Seattle Saturday.

Schommer made the Titans' practice squad last season. He came into training camp with an injured right hamstring and thus was put on the PUP list. It wasn't until last week that Schommer was able to join the team again.

"It definitely felt like a first practice for me which isn't good because I lost all that time," Schommer said in an interview with the Titans' radio network. "I just have to get the rust off faster than a guy that started practicing last weekend....[but] it felt a lot easier than a bunch of that rehab and all of the running they made me do."

The Titans currently have seven safeties on their roster and Schommer knows sticking with the club will take a lot of hard work from now until the start of the regular season Sept. 11 at home against Oakland.

"It's something you have to deal with," Schommer said. "At the same time, I'm not really too worried about that right now. I have to go out and do what I can do and at the end of the day we'll see what happens.

The Tennessee Titans waived rookie running back Stafon Johnson following his injury in Saturday's loss to the Seahawks. The RB suffered a dislocated ankle in the 20-18 loss.

Johnson is accustomed to adversity having suffered a weight room injury at USC that resulted in a crushed neck and larynx.

"Bouncing back from trials and tribulations, this is just a bump in the road," he said. "God has brought me back this far, and it felt good to be where I'd gotten to (sic). This is minimum compared to what I have been through, really."

2010年8月9日星期一

McNair and DeMeco Ryans then are of the same min

"If our rookies start acting like they're too big for their britches, we have some pranks for them," center Chris Myers said. "But it's really more annoying than hazing."

When Cowboys rookie receiver Dez Bryant refused to carry veteran Roy Williams' pads, the spotlight was placed on rookie hazing. Rather than have his head shaved and eyebrows waxed like several Cowboys rookies did last week, Texans first-round pick Kareem Jackson said he's fine with carrying pads and having to buy a PlayStation 3 and meals for veterans — treatment he has received in camp.

Texans third-round pick Earl Mitchell probably has received the worst treatment so far.

Mitchell's jersey was submerged in water and frozen. Nearly everything in his locker was wrapped in athletic tape, but he said the pranks don't bother him.

"It's NFL treatment that I can always say I received," Mitchell said. "I'd much rather a few little pranks than not be here at all."

Receiver Trindon Holliday, a sixth-round pick who is 5-5, 160, had his dose of hazing when several veterans joked he was too small for the stationary bikes that injured players ride during practice. The next day, a pink tricycle had Holliday's name and number on it, right next to the stationary bikes. After practice, Holliday was a good sport by getting on the tricycle and letting receiver Jacoby Jones wheel him around.

Ben Tate said dodging the hazing is all about maintaining DeMeco Ryans  respect and keeping a low profile.

"The vets are doing that to those guys because they're not really complying with what they say to do," said the Texans' second-round pick. "I'm doing whatever they say."

Every night during the team meeting, a rookie has to entertain the room. Some sing a song or perform a skit, but Tate did a stand-up comedy routine. He speculated that his jokes were funny enough because he received a warm round of applause.

Others aren't so fortunate.

"If you're not funny, we'll boo you off the stage," tight end Joel Dreessen said.

When Dreessen was a rookie in 2005, he had to sing the fight song of his alma mater, Colorado State. He noted that rookie hazing in the NFL is nothing compared to freshman hazing in college football. He remembered having to play many drinking games and paying for alcohol.

The majority of Texans players agreed college hazing was worse. Some said that being broke college athletes inspired creative pranks, while others blamed immaturity. When second-year center Brett Helms was playing at LSU, he heard horror stories from former teammates who had made the jump to the NFL. But he couldn't imagine treatment being much more cruel than what he received as a freshman. To this day, he doesn't like to discuss it.

"I'll just say it was a lot worse than this and leave it at that," Helms said.

Rookies earn their stripes

Fourth-round pick Darryl Sharpton said he always has his head on a swivel. His mentor, DeMeco Ryans, is the perfect example of how the Texans generally approach hazing with professionalism.

"We never degrade anybody — it's just the way to earn your stripes as a rookie," Ryans said. "Most of our coaches played in the league and went through it, too."

Coach Gary Kubiak said when he was a rookie in 1983, someone threw a smoke bomb at him in the restroom, and he later had to sing the Aggie fight song in front of the team. Defensive line coach Bill Kollar said hazing isn't nearly as bad as it was when he played 30 years ago.

Offensive assistant and Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews said hazing is a necessary evil, like practicing in 90-degree heat during his Oilers days. Along with fellow Hall of Famer Mike Munchak, Matthews would sit all of the rookies in barber chairs and shave shapes into their heads — mohawks and arrowheads were the most popular. A couple of rookies with proudly flowing hair refused the haircut, quit the team and went home to California.

A sign of toughness

"Now, they've sterilized the whole process," Matthews said. "There's a destructive element to rookie hazing, and it can be negative, but it works to strengthen most guys. You want your guys working to make the team, but there's also an element that we need tough guys because it's a tough game.

"If you're going to cave under a little hazing, then you're probably not going to be the guy we need."

When Titans coach Jeff Fisher took over the Oilers in 1994, like many coaches of the modern era, he did away with rookie hazing. But it still exists around the league. Videos on YouTube show Ravens veterans spraying rookies in the face with fire hoses and taping guys in tubs of ice. Chiefs players Saran-wrapped rookies to the goal post and poured ice down their backs.

The Texans are nine days deep into the miseries of training camp, and that also means they are nine days closer to the most important season kickoff in their brief history. The light at the end of this tunnel looks a lot like the Wabash Cannonball. Pardon the mixed metaphor, but the NFL's schedule makers have thrown the Texans a fastball over the middle of the plate by dispatching the AFC defending champions to Houston for the first game.

The Texans can whiff on the pitch, which has been their long-standing habit against Indianapolis — and in recent openers as well — or they can knock it out of the park. While neither result will make or break the season, the monstrous psychological implications of the outcome should be clear to everyone.

If the Texans finally are serious about becoming a playoff team, they know it behooves them to behave like one Sept. 12. And that seemingly should give every camp practice — every rep for that matter — a ramped-up sense of urgency. They have five weeks to ready themselves for Peyton Manning and the Colts, who figure to be in a message-sending mood themselves after their second-half collapse against New Orleans in the Super Bowl.

"That's a good team for us to focus on," right tackle Eric Winston said, "because, hey, let's face it, they've been the top team of this decade. We know where we've got to be to face a team like that."

It's early, and with the unrelenting heat, these are the kinds of days when the forest easily gets lost in the trees. There remains a full slate of four preseason games to be played — the first of them Saturday at Arizona. But it's never too early to start thinking about the Colts.

"Not at all," left tackle Duane Brown said. "We understand what our goal is this year, and that's to make the playoffs. And to make the playoffs, we've got to go through Indy. "
McNair focused, too

Which is what owner Bob McNair wants to hear. The Colts are weighing heavily on his mind.

"That game needs to be our focus," McNair said. "We use (training camp) to get ready, but we want to get ready for Indianapolis. There's no more important game than that one. We've got to be ready. That's a game that can get us started on the right foot . It's exciting for me just to think about it."

McNair and DeMeco Ryans then are of the same mind.

"Our main focus already is on beating Indianapolis," the defensive captain said. "We've got to find a way to beat them, and it starts now."

Head coach Gary Kubiak is trying not to get ahead of himself. Still, he understands why he's already being asked about the Colts.

"Right now, I'm just trying to get through the next practice," Kubiak said. "We have so far to go, and we have a lot of things that have to happen before we play them.

"But we played very poorly on opening day (last year), and it ultimately cost us. So yeah, I've got some things on my mind that I'll want to change from a coaching standpoint as we head into Week 1. It's only natural (to be thinking about the Colts). Our guys know who they open with, how big a challenge that is for us ."

Kubiak is 1-7 with six consecutive losses against Indianapolis after Dom Capers, his predecessor, went 0-8. Kubiak also is 1-3 in openers, the last two of which have been lopsided defeats. The Texans got pounded by the Jets 24-7 on their own turf 11 months ago and then found themselves watching glumly 17 Sundays later as New York claimed the final AFC playoff spot on the last night of the season, winning on the head-to-head tiebreaker with Houston.
Time is now

Strong safety Bernard Pollard hadn't yet signed on with the Texans when the Jets knocked them reeling, so he can't speak to what went wrong. But Pollard was as frustrated as everyone else in the Texans' locker room after their two close losses to the Colts later in the season. Being new to the team doesn't hinder his ability to grasp the gravity of Sept. 12's outcome.

Oakland Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha

Then the trade for Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell  and the eventual release of JaMarcus Russell -- a No. 1 overall bust -- seemed to confirm that the Raiders were no longer trying to play Fantasy Football and had a plan about building a real team.

"The vibe here is different, the feeling here is different from other years that I've been here," said perennial Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, who has never played on a Raiders team that has won more than five games since he was drafted by Oakland in 2003. "We've had years where we've had so much talent that it was assumed we were going to be a great team -- like maybe three years ago. We've had years where we brought a coach back and, again, it was assumed we were going to have a good team.

"(But) this year it actually feels like our team is going to make some noise because the product that we're putting out speaks greater than the names on the team. It doesn't matter what we have here. What we're doing in practice looks like winning football. It's a different feeling."

Caution: Just because the Raiders seem to be working off a legitimate NFL template and things feel decent, these are the Raiders. We should probably wait and see.

For instance, on Tuesday, four times there were pre-snap penalties. Receivers Nnamdi Asomugha dropped passes. It was very Raider-like. However, this wasn't much different than some of the things I'd seen at previous training camps. And coach Tom Cable isn't letting these things slide.

Add safety Michael Huff to the Darrius Heyward-Bey Fan Club. Asked if DHB looks different this season, as everyone has said, Huff was quick to answer.

"Oh, definitely," Huff said. "I've been there, so I know it's tough being the high draft pick, you come in and put all kinds of unwanted pressure on yourself. I came out here and expected to get 10 picks my first year. You feel a ton of pressure. Then, you sit down and watch the film from the season and you realize that you should have just calmed down, played ball and let things come to you."

Huff also said he has talked with the second-year receiver.

"Me, Nnamdi Asomugha and him have the same agent, so we've all sat down and talked," he said. "I took Nnam's lead. It took me four years until I settled in. Hopefully, it takes him a lot less time than me. We're trying to help him get his head right, get him to focus and let everything come, don't force or rush anything."

New defensive tackle John Henderson is a run-stuffing specialist.

"No pressure, I love stopping the run," he said. "I take a lot of pride in it. That's something we gotta get better at. I live for it. You can take me out on third-and-long. Just put me in on short yardage and all that good stuff."

So who would he rather hit, a running or a quarterback?

"Nailing the running back," he said. "That's weird, ain't it? Think who talks the most - running backs. I want to shut them up. Quarterbacks, he's down there, looking like...running backs talk, I want to shut them up."

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels

After watching the backup running backs to Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter the past two days, one question repeatedly comes up at Dove Valley: When will Moreno and Buckhalter return?

Kolby Smith and Lance Ball have done a nice job under the circumstances. It's just that Smith was a backup for the lowly Kansas City Chiefs the past three years, and Ball has been with four teams and played one game the previous two years.

"Up and down," Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said when asked Tuesday about the play of Smith and Ball. "There's some good, and then there's some learning experiences that they're going through."

Neither Moreno nor Buckhalter made it past the first training camp Knowshon Moreno practice Sunday. Moreno suffered a severe right hamstring injury, if not a significant tear, after catching a screen pass and cutting upfield. He is not expected back until after the Broncos' second preseason game Aug. 21 against Detroit.

Buckhalter seemed to suffer stinger-like symptoms in the same practice. He has been medically cleared to practice. But with the NFL mandating greater caution to injuries near the head and neck, the Broncos are expected to keep Buckhalter out until Monday.

The Orange is back.

Unlike his predecessor, Mike Shanahan, McDaniels likes the alternative orange jersey so much, he's going to have his players start in them.

The Broncos will break out their alternative orange home jerseys for their first home preseason game Aug. 21 against Tony Scheffler and the Lions at Invesco Field at Mile High. The home orange also will be worn twice during the regular season — Oct. 17 against the New York Jets and Dec. 5 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Shanahan didn't care for the jerseys, mostly because the team lost in a key 2004 home game to the hated Raiders in a snowstorm.

The Denver Broncos, who shipped Arrington to the Birds for linebacker Joe Mays, lost top running backs Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter to injury at practice. Moreno could have a torn hamstring.

"It is ironic," Arrington said. "You just never know."

While Arrington was describing the micro-fracture procedure on his right knee and what it felt like to be in shoulder pads and contact work for the first time since Super Bowl XLIII, when he rolled for the Arizona Cardinals, the Eagles scooped up the back they cut to make room for him.

Realizing the Broncos needed a running back, the Eagles rescinded waivers on Martell Mallet, positioning them to make another deal.

"We changed our minds," general manager Howie Roseman said.

Just when it seemed the Eagles' slickness would pay off, running back Mike Bell injured his left hamstring running out a reception. Bell appeared to be taking the pain quite personally.

"He was playing really well," Eagles president Joe Banner said. "He feels like he's got a fresh start. There's

a sense of frustration. I'm sure he's frustrated but I'm sure it's not a long-term thing."

The Eagles aren't exactly married to Arrington, who they inquired about before he re-signed with the Broncos this year, or Mallet, the 2009 Canadian Football League rookie of the year who dropped too many passes at training camp. But with Bell shelved a quick move at running back would seem out of the question.

For a guy who hasn't played since the 2008 season, Arrington ran pretty well at practice. And he likes the idea of playing for the Eagles. After the shock wore off - Broncos head coach Josh McDaniel personally gave him the news of the trade - it was great to feel wanted by the team he admired as a kid in Rocky Mount, N.C.

"When I grew up the Eagles were my favorite team," Arrington said. "We didn't have the Panthers yet. They came around in 1996. Randall Cunningham was my favorite quarterback. I remember him and Bobby Taylor and all of those guys.

"(My agent) said the [Eagles] have pretty much been asking about me the whole offseason. This is one of the teams I was going to come to before I signed back this year with Denver."

Nutcracker, part two: Parys Strikes Back

Nice day for a nutcracker. Let's play two! After introducing his players to his modified nutcracker session in the morning, Mike Singletary returned to it during the afternoon practice. The marquee event is the ongoing battle between Vernon Davis and Parys Haralson.  (Actually, that battle's been going for years. See below). The tight end may have had the advantage in the morning, but Haralson came back in the afternoon, winning one battle and taking Davis to a draw in the other.

I thought tight ends Delanie Walker and Tony Curtis handled themselves well. Walker shoved Ahmad Brooks backward a few steps while Curtis, who is one of three tight ends vying to be the No. 3 tight end, looked good against Diyral Briggs. Brit Miller and Moran Norris again looked good, as you would expect a fullback to in this drill. Isaac Sopoaga threw center Tony Wragge to the ground, no easy task considering that Wragge weighs 310 pounds.

A year ago, Alex Smith's first training-camp pass was met with a chorus of boos. This time, the only cat call from the stand was "Nice pass, Alex!" after Smith's deep pass across the middle ended up in the belly of Davis. Smith's afternoon session certainly was better than his morning session. But the offense is still decidedly behind the defense and nothing looks crisp yet. Ah, but that's what training camp is for.

Miller and Michael Crabtree had two of the better practices. Smith found Miller wide open in the middle of the field for a touchdown during seven-on-seven drills. Smith also hooked up a couple of times with Crabtree. The receiver's best catch came on an overthrown pass from Nate Davis. Crabtree made a leaping, fingertip grab in front of safety Curtis Taylor.

Several 49ers got what the team calls a "veteran courtesy," meaning they did not practice. Those vets were Justin Smith, Travis LaBoy, Takeo Spikes, Michael Lewis and Barry Sims. Reggie Smith filled in for Lewis with the first-team defense while Scott McKillop lined up next to Patrick Willis at inside linebacker. David Baas (concussion) did not take part in the afternoon practice. Rookie Mike Iupati took all of Baas' snaps at left guard.

New Orleans Saints take the heat

Today was more of a mental day," Woods concluded. "Your mind can convince your body to do anything, your body can withstand anything. It's just a matter of saying, 'all right, everybody's hot, it's tiresome, but let's just pick it up, let's get through this and let's get ready for tomorrow's practice."

Sunday marked the ninth anniversary of the day Minnesota Vikings offensive tackle Korey Stringer collapsed on the practice field because of heat stroke and died. Coach Sean Payton said Saturday evening the staff was prepared for the searing weather and closely monitored the situation.

"I think it was probably one of the hotter ones here, in New Orleans, but I think we probably had hotter ones in Jackson," he said, when asked if he could recall more blazing weather. Saints trainers took temperature readings of between 95 and 100 and put the on-field heat index Sunday at 119 degrees.

Was this one of the hottest practices you've ever experienced? Does it make it tougher?

"No, I think it's probably one of the hotter ones here in New Orleans, but Jonathan Vilma I think we had hotter practices in Jackson. We took six breaks just to make sure guys were keeping hydrated. You have to manage it.  At some point at training camp you're going to have to fight through some weather like this and we were fortunate with some cloud cover. It doesn't make it tougher; I just think it's part of getting in shape in training camp, mentally and the challenge of focusing on your job when your body starts getting tired."

I know it's early, but after five practices, how do you think Troy Evans is doing?

"I think he's doing well.  I think one of the things with Troy is that he is experienced and knows what to do.  Obviously he is versatile because he plays so much in the kicking game.  He is handling the snaps well, so he will be a guy we give a look to during the preseason.  You know exactly what you are getting with him; he's very consistent that way."

It seems like every year there's a running back that kind of catches Darren Sharper people's eye. Can you talk a little bit about Chris Ivory?

"He's done that.  He comes from a small school as a transfer.  He went to Tiffin and transferred from Washington State.  He's a guy that we targeted a little bit as the draft went on.  Much like a few of these free agent running backs, we were able to sign him after the draft.  I thought he stood out.  He's done some pretty good things that were encouraging.  He carries his pads well, he has good speed and he's big and put together well."

Does it give a guy like him hope that in the past you undrafted free agents have made this team at that position?

"I think so.  I think that's one of our selling points when we are on the phone with them on that Sunday after the draft with him and his agent.  We look closely at our roster and there are opportunities if you can prove yourself, so I think so."

How reliable of a receiver has Lance Moore become?

"It's one of his strong suits; you know what you are getting.  He understands the Jeremy Shockey passing game, he understands how to run routes, and he has strong hands in traffic."

We saw you work a lot on special teams today. How valuable are your kickers?

"We feel like we have two young kickers, the punter and the kicker both.  One of them was a rookie a year ago, Thomas Morstead, our punter that we drafted.  And certainly, Garrett, we've had him now in his third year.  We don't take that for granted, those are key parts to winning games."

You said you weren't sure if you were going to keep two active QBs and one on the practice squad, but it's pretty clear you are going to keep three, so one guy is going to be out.  Does that make more pressure or more difficult for a guy like Sean Canfield to come in here when he feels like his margin of error is thin?

"I think looking around at the camps right now, you probably see competition like Drew Brees that.  I don't think…we had one year where we went with three and then you kind of piece it together, pretty much guess that two of those three will make the roster.  One might be a practice squad player, but I think like any other position here, there's competition and those guys want to play well.  The games will help define that position for us, just like a lot of these other spots."

The New Orleans Saints will try to recapture their magic as they begin the 2010 season as defending Super Bowl champions.

Elsewhere, the Carolina Panthers begin life without Jake Delhomme under centre, the Atlanta Falcons try to improve their defence enough to make a playoff run, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers continue to rebuild with youth across the board.

Here is a closer look at all four teams in the NFC South heading into training camp.

49ers have been able to keep a close eye on Davis' offseason

Trent Baalke, the team's vice president of player personnel, said Tuesday that "all indications" are that the 49ers will have their entire draft class signed by Monday's opening practice. The team's four top picks remain without a contract, including first-round offensive linemen Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati.

A year ago, the 49ers failed to reach an agreement with Crabtree, their first-round pick, until October. Crabtree played well upon signing, but his prolonged absence cost the player — and the team — a chance for more.

Speaking at the second annual State of the Franchise event before Frank Gore approximately 1,000 season-ticket holders at the Santa Clara Convention Center, Baalke said he anticipates his rookies to be around starting with Day One. "We fully expect them to be here and ready to go," he said.

Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant, the 24th pick overall, is the only NFL first-rounder to sign. Baalke told reporters offstage that he expects there to be a domino effect once other first-rounders start agreeing to terms. "Right now, everyone is in a holding pattern," he said.

In the meantime, the 49ers have been able to keep a close eye on Davis' offseason Alex Smith  conditioning. The tackle struggled with weight issues at Rutgers, once ballooning to 365 pounds, but the 49ers jerseys want him to stay closer

"I've certainly been a lot of places that they're trying to go to. It's just real important for me as a coach to remember what I felt as a player in certain situations.

"What I don't do with my team is I don't talk about my career a lot - I don't say 'when I played, we did this etc etc' or 'these players used to train like this..'

"I try to make them understand that I've seen a lot of great teams, and there's a lot of common denominators with them. They all had great players, and great coaches, but there were no individual stars, they work as a team.

"It's important for our team to know that I'm not trying to make them the 85 Bears, I'm trying to make them the 2010 49ers and a great football team - I want them to draw from other great teams but I want this team to be unique, to be special and that's what I'm aiming to do."

Singletary imposed his will on the team immediately as he sent star tight end Vernon Davis to the locker room before the end one of his first games in charge after he gave away a needless penalty.

It has been clear from then on that Singletary holds discipline as one of his core values, and even the biggest-name player on his team will not get any special treatment.

Champions

"There's no room for individual egos on a team - I don't care how great a player is, he will bring your team to its knees if you allow him to operate under a different set of rules.

"That is something I'm not going to do - I made that clear at the beginning - and that goes for our coaches too. I want us to act like champions both on and off the field, I want us to play like champions and live like champions, I think that's what it's all about."

Singletary also holds himself and his coaching staff accountable too, and will never impose a team rule that he himself is allowed to break.

"It was important to establish the level of excellence we're going to have as a team, what is acceptable and what is not - from everyone, there will be no individuals on this team - rules will stand for everyone, including myself.

"I always make sure I don't disqualify myself - everything I ask them to do I should be able to do as a leader. Too often you find leaders who say 'this is how you should act, is how it should be done' but they go away and break their rules and do something totally different - that's hypocritical, that's going to cause problems."

The 49ers football jerseys opening and closing stretch is not easy. Three of their first four games are on the road, and their only home game during that stretch comes against the Super Bowl champion Saints. The good news is all three road games are against 2009 non-playoff teams and San Francisco should be favored in two of them – it has opened as a two-point favorite at Seattle. San Francisco is 34-29-1 overall in season openers, which includes a 6-3 record in its past nine opening contests. It split with the Seahawks last year and that one loss was the Niners' only one in the division.

A 2-2 record in the first four, at worst, should be manageable and allow the Niners to potentially take off with a favorable schedule until Week 12. San Francisco, like every NFC West team, gets a break in facing the AFC West, which really features only San Diego as a likely playoff team (maybe Denver). If the Niners can hold serve at home (including the London game) in that next four-game stretch, a 5-3 record at the bye sets them up nicely for the second half. That Eagles game is the first matchup ever for the Niners on NBC's "Sunday Night Football." The last time they played on Sunday night (NBC didn't have it then) was 2005. That game with the Bay area neighboring Raiders is the first between the teams since 2006.

The Rams added linebackers Na’il Diggs and Bobby Carpenter

Owens has been on the free agent list ever since he was cut by the Buffalo Bills back in March.  He is also talking with the Cincinnati Bengals as well.

The Rams currently have a very young receiving team, so Steven Jackson the experience that Owens could bring to the line up could help the offense overall.  The Rams are also debuting rookie Sam Bradford, so having an experienced player could give Bradford more confidence, and more options if the young receivers aren't producing.

A lot depends on how well rookie quarterback Sam Bradford makes the transition Chris Long to becoming an NFL quarterback, but I believe he is the real deal.

What may be more important to the Rams jerseys success will be the team's defense, which ranked 25th or worse in every major defensive statistical category.

I like the additions St. Louis made to their defense in free agency and really respect the defensive mind of head coach Steve Spagnuolo.

The Rams added linebackers Na'il Diggs and Bobby Carpenter along with defensive tackles Chris Hovan and Fred Robbins and safety Kevin Payne in free agency and used five of its final six draft picks on defensive players, so I think it's possible St. Louis could very well win five or six games in 2010.

Owens has some connections with the Rams football jerseys coaching staff, but that may not end up being a factor in his decision.  Owens has been looking for a team for a while so he may jump at the first contract he receives.  The Bengals have been looking at Owens to possibly give Palmer another great receiver alongside Ochocinco.

49ers suffered in the NFC West

Well, Alex Smith wasn't exactly an underage drinker when he entered the league, but he certainly played like it at times. Smith has had to awkwardly sing in front of fans since coming into the league, so I'd give him the role of Evan, and Scot McCloughan the role of Seth. McCloughan receives the role of Seth, because Lance Briggs  perioded on his leg back in 2008. Much like Seth, Scot was on the dance floor getting grinded by Briggs, but the NFL found blood on McCloughan's leg and were pretty upset (resulting in tampering charges). Evan and Seth escaped with a small amount of damage, just in time to meet up with McLoven and get to the party. The 49ers are desperately trying to meet up with McLoven and get to the playoffs, so the connection isn't quite complete just yet. McCloughan has left the 49ers, much like Seth and Evan parting ways and going to separate colleges.

Truth be told, I haven't actually seen this movie, but I can imagine Frank Gore Mike Singletary as Samuel L. Jackson. In the movie, Jackson is "tired of these [site decorum] snakes on this [site decorum] plane". In Coach Sing's first game as Head Coach, he wanted winners and when there were snakes on the plane coach proclaimed "Cannot play with them, cannot win with them, cannot coach with them, can't do it". In other words, he was tired of these [site decorum] snakes on this [site decorum] plane. I'm not sure how Snakes on a Plane ended, but we know that Mike Singletary has turned Vernon Davis into a leader and captain. I doubt Sam Jackson put the "C" on any of the snakes he encountered, but you can bet he snubbed them out just as efficiently as Singletary has.

Former Central Michigan University standout Joe Staley has made his mark as an offensive lineman in the NFL, but he's also leaving an impression on the San Francisco 49ers fans.

Staley has his own "Joe Show" on the 49ers jerseys website, where he attracts fans with a lighter approach to football.

The role of Private Pyle (played by Vincent D'Onofrio) is awarded to the new San Francisco 49ers jerseys. The first half of Full Metal Jacket goes through the lives of several individuals at Gunnery Sergeant Hartman's bootcamp. Hartman's goal is to turn the individuals into killers before sending them off to Vietnam, consider Hartman Mike Nolan (except a funnier version). Private Pyle is fat and out of shape and struggles to complete obstacles (or anyting for that matter), much like the 49ers when Mike Nolan came into town. It takes the entire squad at bootcamp to violently assualt Pyle with bars of soap wrapped in towels to get Pyle squared away, much like the years of abuse the 49ers suffered in the NFC West. Eventually Pyle makes it as a rifleman in the Marine Corps, but before he's deployed he fires a "7-6-2 Millimeter, Full Metal Jacket" round straight through Hartman's chest (in the bathroom no less). Mike Nolan was fired by the 49ers, let's just hope San Francisco doesn't turn the gun on themselves.

San Francisco 49ers owner John York

San Francisco 49ers owner John York can not only envision the NFL holding its championship game outside of the USA, but also sees an international franchise in the league's future.

"There is easily enough of a fan base (in London) to stage two games a season," York told Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area. "I think eventually there will be a Super Bowl outside the U.S. I couldn't tell you when that would be. I can see it both ways. I'm not sure what will be first, a Super Bowl over here or an NFL team, but they both seem likely to happen."

The 49ers football jerseys and Denver Broncos will play at Wembley Stadium on October 31.

For some reason York thinks the team will have a good home-field advantage over there.

"I was here for the [New England-Tampa Bay] game last year and there were Nate Davis a lot of 49er fans here," he said.

ohnson had refused to take part in any offseason activities after gaining 2,006 yards rushing and 2,509 yards from scrimmage in 2009. Johnson has said that he wants a new deal that would guarantee him $30 million, which the Titans are not willing to do in the face of CBA uncertainty.

Even if they wanted to give Johnson a huge new contract, the 30 Percent Frank Gore Rule would prevent them from doing so. This is a proviso in the post-CBA labor landscape that precludes teams from giving players extensions larger than 30 percent over the previous year's earnings. The San Francisco 49ers circumvented the rule when giving an extension to All-Pro linebacker Patrick Willis(notes), giving him stacked signing bonuses and injury-based guarantees.

Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt is known as a hard negotiator, but he had Michael Crabtree to realize that paying Johnson a little over half a million dollars in a season where he's a good bet to lead the league in rushing for the second straight year would be ridiculous.

Moving Johnson's 2012 bonus doesn't take care of the larger issue, but it deals with the problem in the short term. With quarterback Vince Young(notes) still getting the hang of the NFL offense (though he looked much better last season) and a defense in transition, the Titans desperately need Johnson in camp, in games, and at his best if they hope to compete in what projects to be a brutally competitive AFC South division.

San Francisco 49ers and nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin

This will make Franklin an unrestricted free agent in 2011. The 29-year-old had 36 tackles last year, including two sacks. The 317-pounder also pulled in one interception.

According to Niner Insider, Franklin can either sign the $7 million, one-year tender from the team or hold out for a better deal. He's missed all the team's workouts so far.

Quarterback Alex Smith and Offensive Lineman Joe Staley watched training and then joined in as coach Clive Allen put on a shooting session.

The pair showed pretty impressive 'soccer' skills as well and Staley, a towering figure whose main job in NFL is to protect QB Smith, found the bottom corner with his first shot at goal!

"From our perspective, we don't have this level of club soccer in this country so to be able to Michael Crabtree watch all your international players up close and personal is great," said Smith, who finished the 2009 NFL season in the best form of his career.

"In fact, we'll soon be into pre-season ourselves, it's just a couple of weeks away.

"I suppose the sports are similar in pre-season because it can be a dangerous time and players new San Francisco 49ers jerseys don't want to take any unneccessary injuries in games that don't really mean that much, but at the same you need the games to get ready to play.

"That's something we have to manage in American Football.

"When we practice we work on specific areas and we'll go for short intervals of 10, 12 plays, take a break and then do something similar. Again, that's similar as well to the high-intensity work your players do."

In 2008, Harris signed a three-year, $16.3 million contract with the Oakland Raiders. He Frank Gore lost his starting job after just 11 games.

No word yet on his future plans.

Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll

Seattle has struggled with their run game since Shaun Alexander's explosive 2004 and 2005 seasons. After which he slipped into fantasy oblivion and the team cut him after the 2007 season. His final two years in the Pacific Northwest were fantasy forgettable.  In fact, the Seahawks run game has been so sad, they haven't ended in the top half of the league in points scored since Alexander's 2005 campaign.

The Seahawks went out and grabbed Julius Jones from the Dallas Cowboys, and backed him with Edgerrin James. Neither did anything worthy of note. Jones has been a bigger disappointment for the Seasquabs than he was in Texas. He averaged 44th place fantasy finishes in his two seasons with the team. At this point he's still on the roster, but he could get cut before the 2010 season gets under way.

Robinson, 30, saw his NFL career shortened by suspensions for substance-abuse Aaron Curry violations. That may explain his financial troubles, too.

The former Wolfpack star may have the most new Seattle Seahawks jerseys recognized name on the N.C. Department of Revenue's lineup, but he has plenty of company -- a half-million fellow delinquent taxpayers, individual and corporate. The total owed is $841 million, a 67 percent increase over the $505 million overdue in 2009.

That points to outrageous irresponsibility and negligence by those who have failed to square Deion Branch their tax bills. But the state also has dropped the ball. This amount of money exceeds the deficit before Gov. Bev Perdue and the legislature made painful adjustments to the state's budget this year. Higher collections could have averted cuts to education and other important programs.

Yet, as The Charlotte Observer reported Monday, the Department of Revenue has 17 Matt Hasselbeck vacancies in its collection division. With bank layoffs in the thousands across the state, can it be so difficult to hire 17 people for these positions? With just a little success, tax collectors will pay their own salaries.

The department explains the jump in money owed, in part, to its improved ability to identify people who fail to file tax returns. That sounds like Tax Collection 101.Still, some of its information may be suspect. For example, it lists Greensboro's top tax debtor -- owing $148,167 -- as living on "Finely Street." There's no such place. The department probably means Finley Street, but if it wants to nail a taxpayer, it ought to at least get the address right.

Revenue officials say about $112 million of the missing money is uncollectible. The debtors can't be found, or companies are out of business, or there are no assets to squeeze. In other cases, however, the department has secured agreements to pay or is garnishing wages.

Conscientious, law-abiding taxpayers should hope state officials don't offer overly generous deals to long-time delinquents. People who pay in full and on time deserve adequate state services in return. But when others don't contribute their fair share, everyone has to carry the burden of budget cuts or, worse, higher tax rates to fill the gap. That's frustrating, and it's detrimental for the state. The impact even harms local governments, which receive less in state appropriations as Raleigh's revenues lag.

Running back Chris Johnson

As made aware to us by agent Nate Haber, fellow agent Andy Simms has announced via Twitter that McCourty recently signed on with PlayersRep sports agency.  McCourty has three years remaining on his rookie deal, so he's likely not in search of a new contract yet.  A sixth-round pick in 2009, McCourty played sparingly on defense as a rookie.

If he keeps the job for 16 games this year, though, the precedent the Titans do or don't set with regard to running back Chris Johnson's contract could conceivably come into play.  In search of a raise, Johnson has two years left on his rookie deal.  McCourty will be in the same position next offseason.

According to Associated Press reports out of Cleveland, free agent wide receiver Bobby Vince Young Engram has signed with the Browns. The AP says that Cleveland has not disclosed terms of the deal, which was reached on Thursday.

And the spin continues. Contrary to information leaked by his agent, no definite decision has been made with regard to Darrelle Revis's contract negotiations with Jets and any possible holdout from team training camp, per NBCSports.com.

The NY Jets signing of left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson to a six-year, $60 million contract extension gives them blindside protection for the foreseeable future but leaves the rest of the AFC in a bit of a quandary. The size of the deal and the guaranteed money is creating issues in San Diego for example. According to the San Diego Tribune, the Chargers find themselves on slightly more tenuous ground in their ongoing stalemate with Pro Bowler Marcus McNeill because of Ferguson's deal. McNeill seems to feel that his value is close to that of Ferguson. San Diego doesn't want to part with that much scratch.

Titans' cornerback Jason McCourty has surpassed Ryan Mouton in the competition to start opposite Pro Bowler Cortland Finnegan for the coming season. NBCsports.com is reporting that the former Rutgers Scarlet Knight has looked impressive in mini-camp. Here's hoping that they don't have to play a Brian Kelly offense this year – oh snap!

Defensive tackle Darnell Dockett of the Cardinals ripped the recent misbehavior of Steelers'Kerry Collins  signal caller Ben Rothlisberger, telling ESPN that "The easiest QB to sack is Ben Roethlisberger if you can catch him in a bathroom stall." Dockett did not express whether an audible would change his chances of sacking the Steelers' QB.
If you have nothing else better to do and re-runs of "The City" aren't on (we can't get enough of that delightfully driven and always impeccably dressed Erin Kaplan either), then check out T.O's television show which had its season premiere Sunday with the episode focusing on his departure from the Bills. Of course, it will be re-aired 17 times between now and next Sunday night, sandwiched between re-runs of "Flavor of Love" and a rock docs special exploring the life and times of Joan Osborne. Yeah, that's what we thought…

Baltimore Ravens rookie tight end

The Ravens jerseys have arguably the best 3-4 defensive lineman in the NFL in Haloti Ngata, who completely disrupts opposing offensive lines. Kelly Gregg returns to hold down the nose tackle position, but has spent the past two seasons battling injuries. The team added depth behind Gregg by drafting Terrence Cody in the second round of the draft. Corey Redding and Trevor Price figure to split time at the other end spot.

At linebackers the Ravens football jerseys are hoping for huge rebound from outside linebacker Terrell Suggs, who only produced 4.5 sacks last season after signing a huge contract. Ray Lewis continues to lead the Ravens at inside linebacker, and really like what they have in fellow inside backer Dannell Ellerbe. Jarret Johnson was a huge part of the Ravens defense in 2009, and should continue to only get better. The Ravens also added depth here by drafting Sergio Kindle.

The Ravens got a minor scare from Ed Reed, who considered retirement, but the ballhawk safety is back for another season. Playing along side Reed is Dawan Landry, who really came on strong in 2009 finishing with 82 tackles and four interceptions. At corner the Ravens are hoping Fabian Washington will be ready to by training camp, and should start opposite of Domonique Foxworth with Chris Carr coming in as the nickel back.

The third-round draft pick's deal carries a total value of $1.877 million, which included standard base salaries of $320,000, $405,000 and $490,000.

The Ravens have two remaining unsigned draft picks: second-round linebacker Sergio Kindle (University of Texas) and nose guard Terrence "Mount" Cody (Alabama).

The Bears lead the NFL

Indeed, a team's special teams can, for lack of a better word, truly make a team "special."

Or not.

In the case of the Chicago Bears, however, they've been far above average in special teams and can thank their coordinator, Dave Toub, for their many successes.

Toub, in his seventh season in Chicago, has led the new Chicago Bears jerseys to the No. 1 overall special teams ranking (according to the Dallas Morning News ranking system) two times and has appeared in the top-third for six straight seasons.

Toub has overseen four Chicago Bears' specialists as Pro Bowlers in Johnny Knox (2009), Brendon Ayanbadejo (2006 and 2007), Robbie Gould (2006) and Devin Hester (2006 and 2007).

Think about that for a second.

The Pro Bowl generally includes four specialists a year: a field goal kicker, punter, return man, and a "coverage man," if you will.

Toub has been responsible for six of those slots over the last six seasons, one-fourth of the total allotment of players chosen.

That's saying something right there, folks.

Yes, he can't be given full responsibility for their successes, of course.

Devin Hester is one of the NFL's best athletes, and part of me thinks that even I could guide him to two or three kick return touchdowns a season (I'd simply tell him, much like Forest Gump, to "run, dummy").

Behind-the-scenes series set to launch - I'm kind of excited for this. It looks like it could be interesting background info.

Chicago Bears: Corey Graham coming up fast - The picture accompanying this article looks like about 30 different levels of uncomfortable. Hopefully he's getting his feet back underneath him.

Your Bears football jerseys questions, your Bears jerseys Answers - I found two versions of this one. The other one had no formatting, so I very generously linked to the ones that won't make your eyeballs want to punch each other into submission.

Yeah, it's slow news time right now. But if you follow WCG on Twitter, you can get everything sent to you personally, without having to do any work. What could be better than that?

Who Will Replace Willie Colon?

Tony Hills.

Hills has been with the Steelers for the last three years. He has not even had the ability to push for even the main back up spot, let alone compete for a starting job. He is not a real option.

Chris Scott.

Scott joined the Pittsburgh Steelers  in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Though he has potential, he is not really an option at this point. He has not even put pads on, so odds are, he is not going to be lining up in the starting role.

Jonathan Scott.

Jonathan Scott joined the Pittsburgh Steelers  this year, on a one year contract. He was a free agent from the Buffalo Bills. J. Scott was brought in to compete for a back up role, more than that of a starter.

He will be given a shot to prove that he has the ability, but honestly, if he was that good, would Buffalo have just let him walk away with out even a restricted free agent tender?

Best guess is no, so he probably won't be good enough to earn the starting job on the Steelers right side.(Jeff Reed)

Jared Gaither, Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens have done almost everything they can to get rid of Gaither this off season. He is no longer in the Ravens long-term plans with last year's drafting of Michael Oher.

Though the Ravens would not normally be in the market to make a trade with the Steelers, this could be a win/win situation for the Ravens and the Steelers. The Ravens don't want Gaither anymore because at the end of the 2010 season, he will become an unrestricted free agent. They are not going to pay him at the end of the year, and have been wanting to get rid of him all season.

If the Ravens would be willing to give up Gaither for a third-round pick (most compensation offers I have heard of, have been for a fifth-round pick or later), the Steelers could solidify the right side of the offensive line.
